If someone asks me what makes my childhood days quite memorable, I always reply: my mama’s stories. And if that same someone asks me ‘which story’, I always answer: Si Juan Katubol. Here’s how mama told the story to me long. long time ago (English and Filipino versions of the story will be posted soon. Just be patient. Hehehe!):
Sayo kaadlaw nagsakay-sakay si Juan Katubol sa daku-dako na bagul. Mango linabayan niya si Dagum sa piliw san tinampo.
‘Juan Katubol mapakarin ka?’ hapot tulos niDagum san naimud niya si Juan Katubol.
‘Nagsimbag man tulos si Juan Katubol: Makadto ako sa balay ni Drag-angan kay paptayon ko siya.”
‘Aw mao? Hala sige, pwede ako mag-upod saimo?’, sabi ulit ni Dagum.
‘Oo, kanana sakay na kay makadto na kita.”
Sunakay man tulos si Dagum sa daku-dako na bagul nan nagpadagos na sira na duwa ni Juan Katubol pakadto sa balay ni Darag-angan. Pagkalipas sin diyo na minuto nalabayan nira si Kimpi na nag-lalanguy-langoy sa piliw sin salog.
‘Juan Katubol mapakarin kmo na duwa?’, hapot man tulos ni Kimpi san naimod niya an duwa.’
‘Makadto kami sa balay ni Darag-angan kay paptayon namo siya.”, simbag ni Juan Katubol.
‘Pwede ako mag-upod sa iyo na duwa? Hulata man niyo ako diyo lang na minuto kay maliwan lang ako.’
‘Oo, pwede ka mag-upod. Dali-dalion mo lang an pagliwan kay maalas-dose na liwat’. ( to be continued)

The story of Katubol is indeed an amusing tale of how the main character engaged itself to a battle and eventually gained allies as it paced its way… Thanks for posting this wonderful folktale using your dialect…. (are you from the 2nd district of the Sorsogon Province?) Our elder has the same narration of Ka Tubol.

It would be great to have the whole story published! I was just asking my father about this story. I’ve heard my grandmother tell this story to us and I still remember it after 20 years. I was thinking of having her tell the story again so I can write it down.
